Foundational Black American inventor, electrical pioneer, and a son of fugitive slaves.  His inventions included an evaporative air conditioner, an improved process for manufacturing carbon filaments for light bulbs, and an improved toilet system for railroad cars.

Meet BESSIE BLOUNT GRIFFIN

A Black American physical therapist, forensic scientist, and inventor. While working with injured soldiers after World War II, she developed a device that allowed amputees to feed themselves; it delivered one mouthful of food at a time to patients whenever they bit down on a tube. Griffin later invented a receptacle that was a simpler and smaller version of the same, designed to be worn around a patient's neck.

Meet Frederick McKinley Jones

A prolific early 20th century black inventor who helped to revolutionize both the cinema and refrigeration industries. Between 1919 and 1945 he patented more than sixty inventions in divergent fields with forty of those patents in refrigeration. He is best known for inventing the first automatic refrigeration system for trucks.

Marie Van Brittan Brown

Our Foundational Black American sister was the first to create and patent the modern alarm system. She created the Ring security system before it was cool. Adding cameras, a panic button, and two way communication. Definitely a pioneer who does not get the credit she deserves.  

Elijah McCoy

Wouldn't you want the real McCoy? The common phrase coined after the high quality, unmatched genius of this Foundational Black American inventor. Elijah McCoy not only had over 50 patents for inventions, but was the creative genius behind the oil drip cup which became the gold standard of lubricating train engines and revolutionized the railroad industry post civil war. 

Also of note are the ironing board and the lawn sprinkler to name a few more inventions..

Patricia Bath 

a Foundational Black American ophthalmologist, inventor, humanitarian, and academic. She was an early pioneer of laser cataract surgery. She also became first woman member of the Jules Stein Eye Institute, first woman to lead a post-graduate training program in ophthalmology, and first woman elected to the honorary staff of the UCLA Medical Center.
